What are 'cookies'?

Cookies are small text files which are downloaded to your computer or mobile device when you visit a website or application. Your web browser (such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome) then sends these cookies back to the website or application on each subsequent visit so that they can recognise you and remember things like personalised details or user preferences.

Cookies are very useful and do lots of different jobs which help to make your experience on websites as smooth as possible. For example, they let you move between web pages efficiently, remembering your preferences, and generally improving your experience (see below for more examples). They are referred to as session or persistent cookies, depending on how long they are used:

• Session cookies only last for your online session and disappear from your computer or device when you close your browser. 
• Persistent cookies stay on your computer or device after the browser has been closed and last for the period of time specified in the cookie. These persistent cookies are activated each time you visit the site where the cookie was generated.

Which cookies does Rebellion Academy UK use, and why?

When you use our site, either on a web browser or a device, the following four categories of cookies may be set:

1. 'Strictly necessary' cookies

These cookies are essential in helping you to move around our website and use features. These cookies do not gather information about you that could be used for marketing nor remember where you've been on the internet.
Some examples of these essential cookies include:

• Automatic forwarding to the least busy server
• Ensuring the functionality of a change from http to https and thus compliance with increased security requirements for data transfer.
• Saving your decision with regard to the use of cookies on our website.

2. Functional cookies

These cookies allow websites and applications to remember choices you make. Whilst these cookies don't collect things like your name or email address, they do collect a unique user identifier code. This enables us to identify your device so that we can improve your experience and make sure your settings are remembered correctly.
Some examples of how we do this include:

• Remembering if you've been to the site before so that messages intended for first-time users are not displayed to you. 
• Restricting the number of times you're shown a particular campaign message. This is sometimes called 'frequency capping'. 
• Making sure you get shown campaign messages that are part of a sequence in the correct order.
• Remembering if we've already asked you if you want to fill in a survey or if you've completed a survey, so you're not asked to do it again.

3. Analytics cookies

In order to keep our content relevant, easy to use and up-to-date, we use web analytics services to help us understand how people use them. For example, we can see which parts of our site are most popular, identify which articles have been read and identify when errors occur. Web analytics services use cookies to recognise your browser or device and, for example, identify whether you have visited our site before and what you have previously viewed or clicked on. This allows us to track information, such as how many individual users we have and how often they visit. It also helps us to analyse patterns of user activity and to develop a better user experience. 

Again, these cookies do not identify you directly as they do not collect information such as your name or email address. However, the information collected by these cookies will be linked to a unique user identifier code. This is a random sequence of numbers and letters which we can use to link information collected by the cookies back to you without the cookies collecting your name or email address. 

4. Third party cookies

All the cookies described so far in this policy are 'first party cookies', which means they are set and controlled by Rebellion Academy UK. Occasionally, third parties may set cookies on our Services which Rebellion Academy UK does not control. These are called 'third party cookies'. This may happen in the following circumstances:

• Embedded content: On some pages of our website, we may include embedded content, for example from YouTube. When you visit a page with embedded content, the service provider may set its own cookies on your web browser to track the success of their application or to customise their application to you.

Rebellion Academy UK does not control the use of these cookies and cannot access them, as cookies can only be accessed by the party who originally set them. You should check the third party websites for more information about these cookies.

How to control your cookies

There are various ways that you can control and manage your cookies which are discussed in a bit more detail below. Please remember that any settings you change will not just affect Rebellion Academy UK cookies. These changes will apply to all websites that you visit (unless you choose to block cookies from particular sites). The settings you change will also only apply to the device on which you change them and will not apply across all your devices. If you want to opt out of cookies on all your devices, you will need to change the settings on all your devices individually.

Managing cookies in your browser

Most modern browsers will allow you to:

•  See what cookies you've got and delete them on an individual basis.
•  Block third party cookies.
•  Block all cookies from being set.
•  Delete all cookies when you close your browser.

You should be aware that any preferences will be lost if you delete all cookies. Ironically, this includes where you have opted out from cookies, as this requires an opt-out cookie to be set. This means that if you opt out from cookies and then delete all cookies, your opt out will not be saved and you will need to opt out again (which will store a strictly necessary cookie so that your device can remember that you have opted out). 

If you block cookies completely, many websites will not work properly and some functionality on these websites will not work at all. We do not recommend turning cookies off when using our site for these reasons.

Managing analytics cookies

It is possible to opt out of having your browsing activity recorded by analytics cookies. Rebellion Academy UK uses Google Analytics and you can opt out of their cookies by clicking here (opens in a new window). Please note that this will take you to Google's website and generate a 'no thanks' cookie, which will stop any further cookies being set by Google.

Don't forget that by not allowing analytics cookies, this stops us from being able to learn what people like or don't like about Rebellion Academy UK, so that we can make them better.

Background

This Rebellion Academy UK privacy policy tells you what to expect us to do with your personal information when you contact us, sign up to be a Rebel or use one of our services. This Privacy Policy is in addition to the Rebellion Academy Terms of Use and should be read alongside them.

Your rights

This policy is designed to conform to the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR). As part of this you have a number of rights:

• The right to be informed about how Rebellion Academy will use your personal data - which is explained in this policy
• The right to access a copy of any personal data Rebellion Academy holds about you (see more details on the Information Commissioner's website)
• The right to have personal data rectified if it is inaccurate or incomplete (more details)
• The right to request the deletion or removal of personal data (more details)
• The rights to restrict and object to processing of personal data (more details about restriction and objection)
• The right to obtain and reuse your personal data for your own purposes (more details)
• Rights in relation to automated decision making and profiling (more details)
• The right to withdraw your consent for the processing of your personal data
• The right to lodge a complaint with Rebellion Academy and/or the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

These rights apply in all circumstances apart from the exemptions detailed on the Information Commissioner's website.

Contacting the data controller

Rebellion Academy UK is the controller for the personal information we process, unless otherwise stated.

Please use the subject line: 'Data Protection Officer'.

This is the way to exercise your rights. For example, to exercise your right to request deletion of your personal data, you can remove your account from Rebellion Academy UK at any time by selecting REMOVE ME from your PROFILE located in the top right dropdown on the Academy. This takes you to a form where you can ask us to remove all your details. Once you have sent it we will erase all of your personal information and history from our systems.

What do we process your data for?

We will process your data for the purposes of:

• collecting information about the trainings and resources you have used, to help identify which trainings and resources we should develop further;
• helping you track where you have to got to in your training, so that you have a coherence experience over time;
• keeping in touch with relevant news, your feedback on your experience with Rebellion Academy and related correspondence;
• sharing information about the trainings and resources you have used with Extinction Rebellion Pathways (who will find you a role).

How do we get your data?

Some of the personal information we process is provided to us directly by you, or indirectly via the Extinction Rebellion Communications Hub, when you sign up to either Rebellion Academy UK. Additional personal information is collected by the Learning Management System ('Moodle') that Rebellion Academy uses to present trainings and track users' progress through the trainings.
We do not inspect or process your individual personal data unless explicitly directed to do so by you (for example, in exercising one of your rights). We are only interested in aggregate data - the patterns and averages of all users together - for the purposes above.

Sharing your information

We will not share your information with any third parties for the purposes of direct marketing.

We use data processors who are third parties who provide elements of services for us.

The ICO defines a 'processor' as: 'data processor', in relation to personal data, means any person (other than an employee of the data controller) who processes the data on behalf of the data controller.

'Processing', in relation to information or data means obtaining, recording or holding the information or data or carrying out any operation or set of operations on the information or data, including:

• organisation, adaptation or alteration of the information or data,
• retrieval, consultation or use of the information or data,
• disclosure of the information or data by transmission, dissemination or otherwise making available, or
• alignment, combination, blocking, erasure or destruction of the information or data.

Don't worry, this isn't as onerous as it sounds, but it covers the fact that we store your data in a database in uk.rebellion.academy.

Where we use third parties for the processing of your data, these may be located outside the EU (in the USA). When this is the case, we endeavour to ensure that those third parties meet the requirements of the GDPR.

In some circumstances we are legally obliged to share information. For example, under a court order (where we have considered we have a lawful basis on which to share the information and document our decision making).

Automated decision-making or profiling

We do not use automated decision making.

Links to other websites

Where we provide links to websites of other organisations, this privacy notice does not cover how that organisation processes personal information. We encourage you to read the privacy notices on the other websites you visit.

Your right to complain

We work to high standards when it comes to processing your personal information. If you have queries or concerns, please contact us at uk@rebellion.academy and we'll respond.

If you remain dissatisfied, you can make a complaint about the way we process your personal information to the ICO as the UK supervisory authority. The ICO provides guidance on making a complaint.

Collecting other anonymous data

Analytics

When you visit uk.rebellion.academy, we use third-party services, including Google Analytics, to collect standard internet log information and details of behaviour patterns. We do this to find out such things as the number of visitors to the various parts of the site. This information is only processed in a way that does not identify anyone. We do not make, and do not allow Google to make, any attempt to find out the identities of those visiting our website.

Cookies

We collect information about how you use our website using cookies and similar technology. This includes your viewing history, IP addresses, device identifiers and information about how long you have stayed on certain pages or what pages you have clicked on.

You can find more detailed information about this in our Cookie Policy. We also log and use information about any service errors or interruptions that you have experienced in order to help us create fixes and to make technical improvements to our website.

Search engine queries

Search queries and results on our website are logged anonymously to help us improve our website and search functionality. No identifiable personal information is collected by us.

We keep our privacy policy under regular review to make sure it is up to date and accurate.
